MAINE-COONS and EXHIBITIONS

The VICTORY is always pleasant, especially mass.

On May 9, 2012 at the international exhibition in Chelyabinsk we were expected by a great luck.

First, our three-year-old cat of Summerplace Fleming Hearts successfully took the third SASM at Belgian expert Bridzhitt Pepermans and became the World champion of WCF. Secondly, he became the winner of a monopedigree ring of maine coons and, thirdly, to the second best animals of an exhibition.

The cat of Glorias Terra Dikaja Orchideja, mother of the record dung who has given rise two months ago, became the best cat of an exhibition (Best opposite sex) in group of semi-long-haired cats, having lost to "husband" to a cat to Fleming. This isn't a shame: after all not Fleming gave birth-fed!

Well and in a monopedigree ring мейн кунов, our kuno-landing bypassed all beginners of breed:
Summerplace Fleming Hearts-1 place
Glorias Terra Dikaja Orchideja - the 2nd place
Royal legacy's Gacomo Cazanova-3 place
Fly lady of Vingilot*CZ 5 place

Our graduate of Royal legacy's Inessa Armand (owner A.A.Tsyganov Chelyabinsk) acted in a class of juniors, received an assessment of "exellent" and there was the seventh in a ring among all juniors of an exhibition, having overtaken thus young boys мейн кунов.

Bag of prizes! Mass of impressions! Ecstasy glory!

The Breed oridgin

As well, as many other breeds, the origin of maine-coons is based on several legends.

The most famous of them and, perhaps, the most fantastic says that the simple farmer cat from American state Maine   "fall in love" with a raccoon. The result of this "love" was the first maine-coon. Certainly, it is no more, than a beautiful fairy tale connected, most likely, with similarity of color of a tail and predatory expression of a muzzle.

The second legend is connected with the French queen Maria-Antoinette. According to it, maine-coons belonged to the royal blood! Imagine: France, hot time, revolution, the Bastile is grasped, royal family in an imprisonment, but faithful servants try to organize Maria Antoinette's runaway to America by the ship of captain Klouga. All her property — the furniture, carpets, and even cats were shipped. But to rescue the queen was not possible, and the ship left port without her. The captain reached the State Maine and lodged there with his wife and royal cats.

Other story tells us why the breed was called “maine-coon”. Ostensibly the first long-haired cats were sold to farmers by the ship's boy Tom Kun who served on Glenn Laury's vessel. The first long-haired tiger cat lodged on a farm of Tarboks, near  a place where Laury’s vessel dropped the anchor. The kittens, witch Tom Kun brought to farmers, became the founders of population of cats of the State Maine.

Today  the representatives of the world  felinology  in the majority consider that breed maine-coon has developed from crossing of the local short-haired cats living in the State Maine with foreign long-haired cats (Turkish mohairs or other cats delivered to America by Vikings or seamen).  Don Shav, judge of TICA, genetic  from the USA, says: «In the Middle Ages it was frequent when the European and American cats became companions of seamen. They helped people to keep stocks of the foodstuffs from rats and mice. And, like seamen, they often emigrated in ports because something seemed to them there more attractive, than on own vessel». With a high probability it is possible to assert that this breed has arisen of crossing of an ordinary American cat (American short-haired) with cats of the Angora breed.

But, anyway, maine-coons  are considered as native cats of the North America, namely — the native of State Maine. The first mention about these giants of the cat's world appeared in 1861. Later, already in 1903, the first material about maine-coons was published. Then appeared F.Pirs's article named «Main’s cats», written specially for the English book «The Book of the Cat» by Frantsiski Simpson. From the article people learned about existence in America of unusual original cats which owner was madam Pier. She told about her cats, but in the article were mentioned another 19 cat owners of the State Maine. According to this information, maine-coon cats existed in staff territory for a long time, even long before Civil war, and to 1880 they became rather numerous and popular.

Time passed and cats of breed maine-coon started to take part in the first exhibitions which took palace in Boston and New York. At that time maine-coons were more popular even then mohairs. In 1895 cat Cosie color braun-tabbi won a rank «the best of the best» in Madison. But with occurrence in 1900 of Persian cats,  maine-coons have conceded to them. So these tender giants remained to be the favorite breed in New England. Their rating in America started to grow up quickly only in 50th years of the XX-th century. At this particular time the first catteries and associations of fans of breed were founded. In 1968 six cat owners based Association of cat owners of Raccoon-like Cats of Maine (MCBFA) By 1980 it included already 1000 fans and 200 catteries! In Russia many people have no idea about these cats even today.

Elena Zagorskay – cattery owner, judge of the second category in FIFe system – says: “Today main-coons are the most popular breed in the world. My first cat was bought in Denmark three years ago. It was the first cat of the new type of breed. Even ten years ago there was an interest to these cats in Russia. But the type of the breed was not finally identify that is why the popularity of main-coons was not big. In our days  maine-coons rises a real interest among the visitors of the cat exhibitions. The cattery owners try to export cats of deferent lines of breed.

New standard of breed caused interest of people to maine-coons, this interest  allocated with their obvious pedigree signs: an especial “maine-coon” sight, large ears with brushes on the ends which make impression upon many, and, of course, the big sizes which involve, strangely enough, more often men». «They are the most unusual and tender at all their size, even there are such expression: «the Gentle giant».

First of all, maine-coon differs from other cats by it’s size and by features in behavior. For example, all that time that I am engaged in cats, I had a proof sensation that all of them are like small doggies. With only one difference: it is not necessary to walk out with them. In general, cats in the majority loyally concern all members of a family. But with maine-coon all is a little differently. They choose the leader among people who surround them, and show the liveliest interest only to this person. They are not persuasive, but they are very observant and always somewhere near. Sometimes they are called "cats-shades".
And they choose the special place for supervision: they need to see everything that occurs around. They have very interesting language, maine-coon mew seldom. More likely, a sound made by maine-coon, could be identified as «kurlikaniye». Actually, it is very fanny to hear that sounds from such impressive animal!

The DESCRIPTION of breed

These cats have  especial structure of fur that was  developed under severe environmental conditions. The fur of maine-coon consists of several layers if it is possible to express so. The first layer: the thick, smooth, rigid protective hair located on the length of a back, gives protection not only against a wind and water, but also protects an animal from mechanical damages. The bottom layer consists of the soft underfur possessing water-repellent properties. Small curly hair of this layer create an air layer that makes the fur elastic and keep an air heat-insulation layer around the skin. The fur of maine-coon is good for all seasons. It is enough dense, short on a head, shoulders and feet, longer on a back and sides, with long shaggy "panties" on hind legs and a hanging down on a stomach.
"Jabot" must be obligatory. Structure  of fur is streaming, silky. An underfur is soft enough and thin, covered with a rough smooth fur. The tail of maine-coon should get to shovels if you bend it towards  back. As the body of these cats is long enough, both a tail is extraordinary long. And one more distinctive feature is, of course, brushes on tips of ears which something remind a lynx.

CHARACTER
Maine-coons are friendly animals. In the family they easily get on with all members. They can be on friendly terms with a dog or other cat (not all representatives of cat’s family are capable for this). Maine-coon, getting to a family where there live any other animals, do not clash with them, and try to collect at once round itself pride. Maine coons have such line of character: getting to unusual conditions for itself, maine-coon behave as if it have lived all life in this house. In apartment they behave easy enough. The basic part of day they simply sleep. But if you want to play with them they are ready to carry “aport” while you will not get tired. They don’t like to sit in a lap because of their long dense fur, but with pleasure will locate on a back of your sofa if you lie on it. Still they prefer to settle down in such place from which they would be visible for everyone: on a microwave, for example, or on the TV. Certainly, it would be remarkable, if each owner of maine-coon would own a country house, in such a way all conditions for cat’s high-grade life would be created. There would be an opportunity  for hunting for mice (maine-coon — excellent hunters), but in a reality not every cat owner can  allow this. Actually, the cat does not need a lot of space. Maine-coons run seldom, they have no habit to skip around the apartment. Well, maybe, except for kittens... Claws, basically, they sharpen sitting. They can to sharpen them about a carpet if  you would allow them, but the furniture for this purpose  interests them a little.

Maine-coons like to extend in all their length. Still they have one pleasant feature: they do not steal. These cats never beg, including this employment below their advantage. Speaking about character, it is necessary to consider the factors of its formation. And one of the most basic factor is a character of the owner. If you wish to bring up a playful cat — it will be playful, if you wish to grow up an animal — you receive it.

MAINE-COON KITTENS

Kittens of maine-coons are born large enough. At the moment of birth they look, as fortnight kittens of a usual house cat. But the most interesting is that they open eyes earlier. In a week they can already look at the world with their own eyes (kittens of other breeds "begin to see clearly" only in two weeks). Despite such sizes, the process of childbirth descends quite normally. As the cats are very close to nature, usually, the help is not required to them (except for extremely rare occurrences). Maine-coons develop slower then other cats. Only four-five years animal is completely generated and is capable for reproduction. Till this time the shape of cat’s body can exchange.

The PRICES

The most inexpensive kitten costs 800 dollars, the kitten level above costs from 1000 euro.

STANDARDS

Under the standard that was accepted in system FIFe, maine-coons are large cats, with characteristic for this breed square outlines of a head, with large ears, a broad chest, with strong skeleton and a long, brawny, rectangular body. Paws long,  brawny. The fur between fingers is especially welcomed because the bunches of a fur between fingers giving original charm to this breed. The head should be large, small vibrissa’s pillows (on which moustaches are located) — developed (because form of the well-known quadrangle form of a muzzle depends on them). Under the new standard, the muzzle should be enough extended. There should be a weak, almost imperceptible transition from a forehead to a nose lobe. If in the old standard this transition was enough strongly pronounced in new —it is poorly outlined. By the old standard the muzzle of a cat must be shorter. A cat of maine-coon breed  must have a well developed forehead. Unfortunately, today in Russia we can’t present such animals. Now we try to solve somehow this problem, crossing various lines of cultivation.

Maine-coon’s ears should be highly planted. But this result is very hard to achieve when the animal is growing. When the animal is adult, the head became bigger, and the ears break up. Therefore for us it is one of the primary problems which also is necessary to be solved. Maine-coon’s eyes should not be round. The form of their eyes must be a bit oval, but not almond-shaped, they must be widely planted. Small eyes are undesirable. With such eyes cat’s sight varies, the expression of a muzzle becomes guarded and angry.
Colour of the cats may be different except colour-points (as  siams cats  and birma cats). The weigh of the cats who are presented in Russia is about eight — ten kg. It is normal. Girls hardly more tiny. They weigh about five kg. We have now a girl who weighs five and a half kg. But while the animal is young, It is hard to predict  what it will be in future. Under the standard the thin paws, widely planted ears, sharp transition from a forehead to a nose lobe, an unhealthy kind, the small size of an animal, a short tail, the almond-shaped form of eyes. First of all, before acquisition it is necessary to study breed history, to resemble exhibitions, to look and compare different animals. You should be assured that, getting a kitten, you have made a correct choice. It is Necessary to get acquainted with owners of cats-parents of a kitten which you wish to buy. If you take an animal for the home, the main thing will be it’s health. Before purchase be convinced that your future pet is imparted (not earlier, than a kitten will be executed four months from a sort). And then you can enjoy to the full contact with this wonderful house giant of the cat's world!

We thank for the information Adintsovu Julia!

MAINE-COONS and EXHIBITIONS

It is known that in 1895 at an exhibition in New York maine-coon named  Leo had an honor to be called the best cat of an exhibition. In the same 1895 at the main American exhibition in square Medison Garden the title "The Best cat" was given to the maine-coon named Kouzi. Then in the cat's world Persians became more popular then other breeds. The fame of  maine-coons returned in 1953 when in the USA the Central club of fans of maine-coon was created. And in 1968 in the USA the Association of fans of maine-coon was created. These two clubs have done much for popularization of breed and have defined its standards. In 1976, after more than hundred years, after the first occurrence at exhibitions, maine-coons got the official recognized right to participate in competitions and exhibitions in the North America. Ruling council of cat’s fans, which headquarters is in London, officially recognized maine-coons only in February, 24th, 1988. In France distribution of this breed started in 1981 when the first cat by name of Charlie had been delivered from Germany.

In Russia the first maine-coon appeared in 1989. At the beginning of development of Russian felinology the pair of these remarkable animals had been presented to chairman of Moscow club of cat’s fans "Felis" O.L. Abramovoj by her friends from Denmark. It was the snow-white cat Narnia's Gorki named in honor of the great Russian writer, and black smoky cat Narnia's Co-coon.

Today in Russia you can find over 100 maine-coon’s catterys from Kaliningrad to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. Coons participate in all modern exhibitions and stably make furor. The economic situation in our country is stable, people have good income, and many of them live in spacious apartments, build country habitation. So I can tell with confidence that this breed will get accustomed and will be popular in Russia.
